AcknowledgementsThe publication of this book has brought my family together in a way that I had not anticipated. I am accustomed to the old maxim "no man is a hero in his own country" so I was somewhat diffident when I asked members of my family to read my manuscript. Their response has been more than gratifying. My son Bill Silvert, physicist, oceanographer, computer modeler and science editor, edited the manuscript with the same enthusiasm that he would show his scientific colleagues. My son John Oppenheimer, who teaches environmental science at the Staten Island campus of the New York’s City University, read the manuscript with a critical eye, and his suggestions and amendments added vital substance to the text. John is married to a young physician and public health consultant who was raised in Africa. Each year Ana Paula goes to Africa to work on medical relief and public health projects. She is a superb organizer and her suggestions for the format and substance of the book proved to be appropriate for the style of the book. Other members of the family contributed to the final manuscript. Bill’s wife Emília Cunha, an oceanographer, read the manuscript and offered helpful comments. My very capable granddaughter Rebecca Silvert, who is a linguist, arrived on the scene when the layout of the book was being designed, and Becka helped make the format interesting and easy to read My son Tony Oppenheimer, a physician, prompted me to warn of the allergies that are caused by some foods. His wife Valerie is a demographer and reminds me that ultimately it is food resources that sustain populations. I thank them all. |
